penguin olive party snacks

These olive and cream cheese penguins are easy to make and the perfect healthy snack for a birthday, a class party, or just a novel way to get your kids to eat some veggies! Here is how to make them:

Penguin Olive Appetizers

Ingredients:  (makes 18 penguins)

  • 18 jumbo black olives, pitted
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 18 small black olives
  • 1 large carrot
  • 18 toothpicks

Directions:
1. Cut a small slice from top to bottom in the side of each jumbo olive. Carefully insert about 1 teaspoon of cream cheese into the slit to resemble the penguin’s white chest.

2. Slice the carrot into eighteen 1/4 inch thick rounds; cut a triangle out of each carrot slice to form the penguin’s feet. Save the cut out piece to use as the penguin’s beak.

3. Cut a small horizontal slit into the smaller olive and insert the carrot triangle beak.

4. To assemble your penguins, stick a toothpick into the carrot feet base. Then add the large olive body, hole side down. Finish by adding the smaller olive head to the top

Snowflake Window Clings

Let it snow,  Let it snow, Let it snow!

Well, the Christmas decorations have all been taken down and the confetti swept away from New Year’s, and things were looking a little bare around here.  So, I kept up my twinkling snowflake lights and the kids and I made these snowflake window clings to add some wintery fun.

DIY Oscar Party Centerpiece

Make your own Oscar party centerpiece

Are you looking for a fun DIY idea to decorate at your next awards show party? We originally saw the idea for these great trophy style table toppers a bunch or years ago in Family Fun magazine and we liked it so much that we had to feature it here. Here’s how to make your own whimsical Oscar party centerpiece.

How to Make a DIY Oscar Party Centerpiece

  • First, pay a visit to your local Dollar Store or Big Lots and buy the lightest, cheapest male Barbie style dolls you can find.
  • Spray paint them gold and let them dry completely.
  • Create a heavy base for your statuette by spray painting a block of wood, a weighted tuna can, or some other item that will hold your “Oscar” upright.
  • Hot glue your golden doll to your golden base.
  • To make the pretty floral arrangement in the photo, buy a ball of floral oasis and stick in flowers that complement your party decorations. Wedge (or glue) the arrangement onto your Oscar’s upraised hands — stick the hands deep into the oasis so the flowers are balanced and won’t topple over.
  • Voila! Your Oscar party centerpiece is complete!

Reunion Dinners are a common way of welcoming in the New Year in China. Family and friends are invited to share in a meal that honors happiness, prosperity, luck, fertility and longevity. Some typical foods served include fish, spring rolls, tangerines, and dumplings (Jiaozi). If you add a peanut to your dumpling it symbolizes long life for the person who eats it! If you are ambitious and would like to try making these dumplings at home, here is a video tutorial we found that can show you how:

Sometimes thought-provoking riddles are hung from the bottom of these paper lanterns as a party game or conversation starter.

The flower that is said to represent the Year of the Monkey is the chrysanthemum. You can find these at most grocery stores and they can be a great addition to your party décor.

Party Gifts are also a part of a Chinese New Year celebration and can be a fun touch to your gathering. Chinese red envelopes filled with coins or new crisp bills are the most traditional option. You can also find fun toys and souvenirs at local Asian markets or online. Amazon has lots of options like small plush monkeys or these double dragon lucky coins.
