September evenings are a great time to reconnect with friends and neighbors after the rush of summer. What better way to do this than a block party! Last weekend my friend Melissa and all of the neighbors on their block shut down part of their road to host their annual Spaghetti in the Street Block Party. Lots of pasta, wine, and talking until late into a balmy September night. What a great way to kick off fall! Here are some of the highlights of the party…
ORGANIZING A POTLUCK — This block party was set up as a potluck event. Some families made their signature sauces, some brought pasta, some were in charge of salads, garlic bread or dessert. Everyone brought their own party beverages. (Visit our Planning a Potluck Party blog page for lots of ideas to help you organize a potluck party.) Some online sign up sites that can also be really helpful are Punchbowl and Sign Up Genius.
INVITATIONS — Evite made the invitations very easy for this event. They have a good selection of invitation options and sending the invites online allowed guests to invite family and friends while giving the party planners instant feedback on the head count.
DECORATIONS — Because this party was held outdoors at night, it didn’t require a lot of decoration. However, great strings of globe lights defined the party area and gave the street an instant atmosphere of celebration. Since this was an Italian themed pasta feed, all the tables were pushed together and covered with a red gingham table cover (you can purchase these in one long roll to cover everything at once.) Mason jars filled with flowers and bowls of parmesan cheese were also added to the tables as a finishing touch.
ACTIVITIES — What Italian party would be complete without music? The serenades of an accordion player during dinner are a fun annual touch to this block party. Also, a net was set up and throughout the evening various games of volleyball and a pickle ball tournament kept the more active folks entertained.
WRAP UP — With all this good food, music, and great neighbors, who wouldn’t have fun? The party went on deep into the night, guaranteeing that next September everyone will be looking forward to doing it all over.
