Team Senior Night Ideas

This week marked the end of the league game season for the high school softball teams in our area, and since I am the team mom for my daughter’s school I was put in charge of coming up with some Senior Night ideas to honor the players who were graduating this year. Here are some of the things that we came up with for our team, and even more fun Senior Night ideas we collected from the team that we played.

1. Senior Night Gifts  — The team we played on Senior Night pooled their money and got each graduating player a sweatshirt from the college that they would be attending next year. For our team, we asked each non-Senior player to contribute a note and/or small gift to be put into a Senior Night gift basket. The gift ideas could be anything from gift cards to small items with personal meaning for each player. Here are some of the gifts ideas that went into our Senior Night basket:

  • Framed team photo  senior night gifts
  • T-Shirts with the team logo
  • Small items from the college each player would be attending
  • Softball key chains and eye black
  • Glass candy jar with players’ favorite candies, personalized with their name and college written in college colors
  • Humorous items from jokes throughout the season
  • Personalized CDs with the team walk-up songs
  • Gift cards

2. Senior Posters and Banners — A great idea that the other team put  together was posters for each girl with their name, graduating year, and a collection of Senior Night posterpictures including one from when they were little, one team picture, one picture with the coach, and a few action shots. These looked great! For our Seniors we made a big banner to hang on the backstop , as well as colorful poster board softballs with each graduate’s name, uniform number, and graduating year.

3. Senior Night Decorations —  Decorating the locker room and around the field can make Senior Night even more special. Here are some ways to make your game area look great!

  • Hang banners
  • Use balloons
  • Write messages for graduates on walkways using sidewalk chalk
  • Spray paint the Seniors’ names and numbers in the outfield
  • String streamers in the locker room and hang a star with each Senior’s name from them
  • Write the Seniors’ names and numbers on the field using line powder
  • Set out big cardboard stand ups of each Senior near the spectator area

Senior Night Decorations

In the locker room where we played out last game, the home team has a huge beam painted in their team colors. As each class of players graduates, it is a special right for them to get to sign their name and class with Sharpie pen on the beam.

4. Senior Night Activities — Including some special activities can make Senior Night really memorable. Here are some things we did for our graduates:

  • Each Senior was walked onto the field with her parents, where she was presented with balloons (*I made special balloon weights by drilling a hole through a softball and running the ribbons through), her gift basket, and flowers for mom. Then first the coach said a few words about each girl, and after that each player got to speak, thanking her parents and coaches, and offering some words of wisdom for the younger players on the team. (This was really sweet, and I have to say that there were very few dry eyed in the parent section of the bleachers during this part of the evening!)
  • The National Anthem was performed by a volunteer player on the team (Also very touching)
  • After the game we had a potluck taco dinner for everyone, with lots of amazing food and desserts. This turned out to be a highlight of the evening because the girls got to unwind, laugh about memories of the season, look through their gift baskets and generally goof around.
  • Another fun idea was to show a musical slideshow of the season, with a special section dedicated to then and now pictures of the Senior players.

Senior Night

In all, it was a really great night, and a great way to commemorate the last home game for a wonderful group of Senior players.
