Valentine’s Day Paper Crafts

Paper Crafts for Valentine's Day

This past week my girls and I had a few free moments together and we thought it would be fun to do a few Valentine’s Day paper crafts together. We decided to see if we could make some pretty decorations that could help decorate the house a bit for Valentine’s Day. We came up with two different, yet surprisingly easy, craft ideas — A Valentine’s Day winter branch bouquet and a paper heart wreath. Here is how we put them together…

Valentine’s Heart Bouquet

Materials:Valentine's Day branch bouquet

  • An assortment of bare branches
  • A jar or vase
  • Dirt, sand, small stones or other material to anchor your branches
  • Colored paper (or other small decorations to hang on branches)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Ribbon (optional)

Directions:

  1. Assemble your branches in your jar.
  2. Cut out some paper hearts and other decorations and glue them to your branches. (You might also add some glitter, stickers, or any other decorative elements that you like. Whatever strikes your fancy!)
  3. Finish by adding a bow to the neck  of your jar.

Paper Heart Wreath

Materials: Paper heart wreath

  • Colored paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Glue and glue dots
  • Ribbon

Directions:

  1. Cut 2″ x 11″ strips of colored paper (between 8-12 strips makes a good size wreath.)
  2. Fold each strip in half, making a sharp crease.
  3. Fold the ends together and glue into the shape of a heart. (You’ll need to hold each one for a minute to make sure it stays in place.)
  4. Use glue dots to stick your hearts together and form a circular wreath.
  5. As you are forming your wreath, add your ribbon (still using the glue dots) between the top 3 or 4 hearts to form a hanger.

This project took only about a half hour from start to finish. Super easy! For more Valentine’s Day ideas, take a look at our Valentine Party page.

Penguin Themed Snack, Craft, and Party Ideas

Today we’re all about the penguins! Who doesn’t love these sophisticated, yet adorable little waddlers on a blustery winter day? We’ve rounded up some of our favorite penguin themed ideas, including a healthy penguin snack, a wintery penguin craft, and of course, lots of penguin themed party ideas. Have fun!

penguin olive party snacks

These olive and cream cheese penguins are easy to make and the perfect healthy snack for a birthday, a class party, or just a novel way to get your kids to eat some veggies! Here is how to make them:

Penguin Olive Appetizers

Ingredients:  (makes 18 penguins)

  • 18 jumbo black olives, pitted
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 18 small black olives
  • 1 large carrot
  • 18 toothpicks

Directions:
1. Cut a small slice from top to bottom in the side of each jumbo olive. Carefully insert about 1 teaspoon of cream cheese into the slit to resemble the penguin’s white chest.

2. Slice the carrot into eighteen 1/4 inch thick rounds; cut a triangle out of each carrot slice to form the penguin’s feet. Save the cut out piece to use as the penguin’s beak.

3. Cut a small horizontal slit into the smaller olive and insert the carrot triangle beak.

4. To assemble your penguins, stick a toothpick into the carrot feet base. Then add the large olive body, hole side down. Finish by adding the smaller olive head to the top

Snowflake Window Clings

Let it snow,  Let it snow, Let it snow!

Well, the Christmas decorations have all been taken down and the confetti swept away from New Year’s, and things were looking a little bare around here.  So, I kept up my twinkling snowflake lights and the kids and I made these snowflake window clings to add some wintery fun.

DIY Oscar Party Centerpiece

Make your own Oscar party centerpiece

Are you looking for a fun DIY idea to decorate at your next awards show party? We originally saw the idea for these great trophy style table toppers a bunch or years ago in Family Fun magazine and we liked it so much that we had to feature it here. Here’s how to make your own whimsical Oscar party centerpiece.

How to Make a DIY Oscar Party Centerpiece

  • First, pay a visit to your local Dollar Store or Big Lots and buy the lightest, cheapest male Barbie style dolls you can find.
  • Spray paint them gold and let them dry completely.
  • Create a heavy base for your statuette by spray painting a block of wood, a weighted tuna can, or some other item that will hold your “Oscar” upright.
  • Hot glue your golden doll to your golden base.
  • To make the pretty floral arrangement in the photo, buy a ball of floral oasis and stick in flowers that complement your party decorations. Wedge (or glue) the arrangement onto your Oscar’s upraised hands — stick the hands deep into the oasis so the flowers are balanced and won’t topple over.
  • Voila! Your Oscar party centerpiece is complete!
