Cupcake Party Ideas for Invitations

Sending great invitations can make your guests feel special before the party even starts. Here are some fun ideas for invitations that you can buy or make yourself.

  • Recipe Card Invitations — Write out your party information on a recipe card. You might also include in the envelope a blank recipe card and ask each guest to bring their favorite cupcake recipe to share with the hostess.

  • Cupcake Wars Invitations — Invite your guests to come and participate in a challenge based on the Cupcake Wars television show where bakers compete to make and decorate cupcakes based on a certain theme. You might download the show’s graphic logo from your computer and write your party information underneath. Be sure to include the theme of your design challenge; perhaps friendship, or something special about the guest of honor.

  • Say It with Sprinkles! — Send each guest your party information written on a pretty decorative tag attached to a bottle of sprinkles. Send each guest a different variety of sprinkles or decorator sugar and have them bring them to the party to use in the creation of some fun cupcakes. These should be either hand delivered or sent in padded mailing envelopes.

Table decorations

      • Scatter candy confetti down the length of your party table for some edible décor.
      • Set out a variety of bowls of cupcake toppings such as fruit, marshmallows, sprinkles, candy, and icing, and let your guests design their own cupcake masterpieces.

Cupcake Party Ideas for Activities

Have a Cupcake Wars Party Bake-Off Challenge! — Divide your group into two or three teams, let them pick their team name, and see who can come up with the cleverest creations that follow a certain theme. Before and after the baking, let your guests watch some episodes of the TV show Cupcake Wars. Here’s how:

  • Set each team up at a covered work station table with the following materials:
    • A cupcake pan and liners
    • Cake mix (You might provide two options)
    • Icing, food color, and a variety of sprinkles and candies (** On your invitation, ask guests to bring a fun topping to the party for their design)
    • Mixing bowl, spatulas, plastic knives for spreading, a mixer, oven mitts, and paper towels
    • **Optional — A secret ingredient, paper and toothpicks to design cupcake toppers, a presentation stand, and team tee shirts or aprons to design during competition
  • Give teams 1 hour to bake and decorate their cupcakes. Award them points and select a winner based on the following criteria:
    • Taste
    • Appearance
    • Fulfillment of theme and use of secret ingredient
    • Presentation to judges
    • Cleanliness of work station

Decorate Cupcakes — For a simpler party activity, set out pre-baked cupcakes and a variety of frosting and toppings and let your party guests decorate their own cupcakes. For more ideas related to this activity, take a look at our cookie party page.

Design Aprons — Provide a plain cloth apron and some fabric pens for each guest and let them decorate their own souvenir apron.

Play “Hot Cupcake” — Use a plush cupcake for a baking themed version of the game “hot potato.” To play, have your guests sit in a circle. Turn on some music and have them pass the cupcake around the circle. Turn off the music at random points in the game. Whoever is holding the cupcake when the music is turned off is out until the next round. Play until there is one child left.

Read a Cupcake Story — If you are hosting younger children and waiting for some goodies to come out of the oven, or if you’d like a quiet activity, why not gather the group and read a cupcake themed children’s book aloud. Here are some that we like:
