Glass Ball Ornament Crafts

glass ball ornament craft

Here are some glass ball ornament crafts for both kids and adults that can help you create easy and beautiful gifts for family, friends, and other special people!

Photo Ball —  A great way to commemorate the year is with this glass photo ball. These make perfect gifts for grandparents or other family members. Since we have two daughters, I glue their photos back to back so that the ornament shows a smiling face from every direction!

  • Clear glass ball ornament
  • School photo (or other small photo)
  • Small beads, gems, or other decorations to fill in the bottom of the ornament
  • Narrow holiday ribbon
  • Craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Paint pen (optional)

  1. Pull the metal top off the ornament and fill the bottom with a few colorful beads or decorations.
  2. Glue two small photos together, sandwiching a piece of ribbon between them.
  3. Carefully roll the photos and insert them into the ornament, gluing the ribbon to the top of the ornament so that they wll stay upright.
  4. Place the top back onto the ornament.
  5. Add a decorative piece of ribbon as an ornament hanger.
  6. **Optional: I like to use paint pen to date the ornament and to add another small piece of ribbon around the metal top.

Swirled Paint Ornament — This is a beautiful and easy ornament craft for any age. My kids first brought these home as a school project when they were in pre-school.

Materials:  swirled paint ornament craft

  • Clear glass ornaments
  • Acrylic or tempera paint in 2-4 different colors
  • A plastic cup

  1. Remove the metal cover from the ornament.
  2. Squirt a blob of one color of paint into the ornament and swirl it around to spread the color.
  3. Add a second color and roll the ornament in your hands to create a swirly pattern.
  4. If you wish, add a third and/or fourth color to the mix.
  5. If you still have clear spots, cover the ornament’s opening with a paper towel and shake it a bit more vigorously. (**Note — Try not to overmix the colors or you’ll end up with a muddy mix. If this happens, you can always rinse out the ornament with warm water and start over.)
  6. Turn your ornament with the opening facing down into a plastic cup (so extra paint will run off) and allow it to dry for a few days.
  7. Once dry, but the top back on and add a ribbon to hang your masterpiece.

Glitter Gem Ornaments — These pretty ornaments can add some sparkle to your tree. People will think they came from a store!

Materials:  gem ornament craft

  • Solid colored ball ornaments
  • Plastic gems with adhesive backs
(Or you can use glue dots to hold gems in place)
  • Gold glitter paint pen
  • A plastic cup

  1. Stick your colored gems onto your ornament.
  2. Rest your ornament in the plastic cup. Use your glitter paint pen to outline the gems on the top half of your ornament.
  3. Let dry.
  4. Once this half is dry, flip the ornament over and repeat, outlining the remaining gems and allowing them to dry.
  5. Add a pretty ribbon to the top to hang your finished ornament.
