New Years Eve is a time for gathering with good friends, remembering the best of the year gone by, making plans for the year ahead, and celebrating the passing of time. Here are our favorite ideas for New Years invitations, activities, decorations, party favors, and more!

New Years Eve Party Ideas for Invitations

Great invitations can make your guests feel special before the party even starts. You can purchase some pre-made New Years Eve party invitations, or with a little creativity, make some yourself. Here are some ideas for both options:

Champagne Invitations — First cut the outline of a champagne bottle from green cardstock. Then add a decorative label to the front with all of your party information. Use a gold paint pen to draw accents on the label and make a cork on top. As an extra surprise, add gold confetti to the envelope! (If you want to go all out, you could also write your party information on a decorative tag and tie it to a bottle of real champagne or sparkling cider. Hand deliver these to your guests.)

Clock Invitations — Most New Years Eve party themes involve the celebration of time. A fun idea for a handmade New Years party invitation is to draw a circular clock face with the hour hand at midnight and the minute hand at about ten minutes ’til. In between the hands squeeze in all the numbers of the countdown, with a big 10 on top, and then 9-0 wedged in getting smaller and smaller.

Here are a few New Years Eve party ideas for invitation wording:

  • Let’s raise a glass
    to the coming New Year.
    We’ll toast to the holidays
    with friends and good cheer!

  • As the clock winds down
    and the old year ends…
    We’d love to celebrate
    with all our good friends!

  • Should auld acquaintance be forgot
    and never brought to mind?
We disagree and hope to see you singing
    Auld Lang Syne!

  • It’s a party you won’t want to miss!
    Because everyone at midnight
    is sure to be kissed!

**General Invitation Tips** — If you choose to make your own party invitations, don’t forget to include the date, location, and time of your event. It is also helpful to put the host’s name, RSVP by date, and either your phone number or email.

A fun idea for a party activity is to make a time capsule. If you want to do this you should ask each guest to bring something to the event that is symbolic of the past year.

New Year’s Eve Party Decorations

Decorations for a New Years Eve party can be either colorful or classic. A popular color combination that can make your party feel both festive and elegant is black, white, silver and gold. You can get a great start on decorating for any party theme by choosing a color scheme and using it in your decorating basics, such as tableware, balloons and streamers. Here are some other New Years Eve party ideas to help you decorate like a pro.

Spray Painted Pots — Spray paint assorted terra cotta pots in white, silver, or gold and tie a black ribbon bow around each. Plant them with ivy, white orchids, or decorative herbs such as rosemary. For an extra touch, set the pots on trays surrounded with Hershey Kisses (you can usually find these with different colored foil wrappers) or Christmas tree ornaments.

Decorative Glassware — Use martini glasses or champagne flutes on your serving tables to hold decorative candy arrangements. For a party with a black, white, gold and silver theme, consider using Hershey Kisses, colored jelly beans, Good N’ Plenty, or M&Ms. Surround the glasses with curling ribbon and confetti.

Top Hat Serving Bowls — Turn party top hats into serving bowls by fitting them with glass bowls or lining them with napkins.

Lighting — Lighting can be an important part of your New Years Eve party decoration. Consider hanging colored lights or using candles to create an elegant atmosphere.

Champagne Bottle Balloon Weights — Have your champagne bottles serve double duty by using them as balloon weights. If you have a silver ice bucket, set out your champagne and balloons, and then at midnight you’ll be all ready to go!

Noise Makers and Party Beads — Traditional New Years Noisemakers and colorful party beads make great table decorations that can later turn into New Years Eve party favors.

Make a New Years Wishing Tree — Find a large decorative branch and set it in a pot. Anchor it down with pea gravel. Put out markers and fancy paper ribbons and ask each guest to write one wish for the new year. Tie the ribbons to the tree. For an added touch, attach paper flowers to the branch.

New Years Eve Party Ideas for Activities

A New Years Eve party can last for a while, so it’s a good idea to have some party activities to keep everybody engaged and having fun. Here are a few suggestions for New Years party activities:

Music and Dancing — Music is an important part of any celebration, and since everyone is already dressed up, why not have some dancing! Consider hiring a DJ, or making a playlist prior to your party that you and your guests will enjoy. A themed playlist can be a hit as your guests try to figure out what ties the songs together. Here are some songs about time that can be the start of a great New Years party playlist:

  • Time is on My Side — The Rolling Stones
  • Time in a Bottle — Jim Croce
  • Too Much Time on my Hands — Styx
  • Time — Hootie and the Blowfish
  • Time (Clock of the Heart) — Boy George
  • Time After Time — Cyndi Lauper
  • Time Marches On – Tracy Lawrence
  • The Time Warp — Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack
  • Tik Tok — Ke$sha
  • Another Auld Lang Syne — Dan Fogelberg
  • New Year’s Day — U2

Name Your Resolutions Game — Another fun New Years Eve party idea is to have everyone write down three resolutions (or just one if you have a large group). Place them all in a hat. Take turns reading them aloud and trying to guess whose resolution is whose. If you want, give a prize to the person who guesses correctly the most often.

Time Capsule — Ask your guests to each bring one thing that is symbolic of the year for a time capsule. Display these on a table at your party for everyone to see. Save the time capsule to open at next year’s party!

Photos — Taking photographs at your New Years party is a great ice breaker and can also provide some fun memories of the event to either send your guests or to keep in an album. Depending on your budget, you could rent a photo booth, hire a photographer, set up a photo backdrop area with a camera for guests to visit during the party, or place disposable cameras on the tables for people to use throughout the celebration.

A Year of Trivia — Go online and look up top headlines, top ten songs and movies, and other trivia from the past year. Have a contest to see who can identify the year’s highlights.

Sing Another Auld Lang Syne — If your group is musical, why not have everybody join in singing the traditional Auld Lang Syne? Here are the Auld Lang Syne lyrics:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
And give us a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

Watch the Times Square Ball Drop — One of the most traditional New Years Eve party ideas is to watch the ball drop in Times Square. Set up a television somewhere in your party area tuned in to the broadcast of this annual event. Be sure to have everyone say the countdown together!

Favor Ideas for After the Party

  • Fill paper bags with fresh pastries or bagels, along with small cartons of orange juice for a ready made New Years breakfast. Make a tag for the bags that says, “Thanks for sharing New Years Eve with us!”

New Years Eve Party Ideas for Food

The food you choose to serve at your New Years Eve party largely depends on what type of celebration you are planning. However, if your party is going to last for more than three hours, you might consider serving buffet style snacks in different courses throughout the evening. That way people can mingle and snack all through the night.

Here’s How:

Start with a Variety of Appetizers — Some easy options include a vegetable tray, cheese and crackers, chips and dip, and maybe a few warm options.

Follow with Some Hearty Buffet Choices — You might offer a selection of sandwiches, a few salads, bread and pasta.

**Don’t forget a traditional New Years Eve bean or black eyed pea recipe!

Here is a recipe from Emeril Lagasse for Hoppin’ John, a Southern New Year food tradition:

Personalized Theme Kits at Stumps

Hoppin’ John

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large ham hock
1 cup onion, chopped
1/2 cup celery, chopped
1/2 cup green pepper, chopped
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 pound black-eyed peas, soaked overnight and rinsed
1 quart chicken stock
Bay leaf
1 teaspoon dry thyme leaves
Salt, black pepper, and cayenne
3 tablespoons finely chopped green onion
3 cups steamed white rice

Heat oil in a large soup pot, add the ham hock and sear on all sides for 4 minutes. Add the onion, celery, green pepper, and garlic, cook for 4 minutes. Add the black-eyed peas, stock, bay leaves, thyme, and seasonings. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 40 minutes, or until the peas are creamy and tender, stir occasionally. If the liquid evaporates, add more water or stock. Adjust seasonings, and garnish with green onions. Serve over rice.

End with a Dessert Tray — Offer your guests some sweets to wrap up the evening. You might have a cookie tray or an assortment of pastries. A fun New Year’s Eve party idea is to serve a dessert tray with a few party sparklers added for decoration.

Drinks — Consider having a few drink choices for your guests, including water. Don’t forget to include some champagne or sparkling cider for a New Years toast!
